Westminster Academy offers an extensive variety of extra-curricular activities as part of our extended school day. Our clubs and activities help students to make friends, learn independently, consolidate learning and increase confidence.
Our Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) and Extra-Curricular programme is now starting to return following the restrictions of last year. You can find our current list at the botttom of this page, with more clubs coming soon.
Expressive arts and enterprise
Our music, dance and drama groups have the opportunity to perform several times every year. 2017 saw WA's first ever musical production, Bugsy Malone, which was a huge success, followed up by Hairspray in 2018 and We Will Rock You in 2019. We even enjoyed a virtual performance of Annie in 2020! Students also make the most of computing clubs, a popular film club and Young Enterprise.
Our first-class sporting facilities allow the school to offer sports at lunchtimes and after school. Activities include popular sports such as football and rugby, as well as athletics, gymnastics and 'Nike Training'. Our collaboration with Greenhouse Sports gives students access to specialised coaching and mentoring in basketball.
Our numerous academic clubs are available to all students, whether they are looking for help with their homework or to challenge themselves. Our departments - English, Maths, Science, Humanities, Languages, Enterprise, PE and Expressive Arts - run clubs for all year groups and there are lots of other activities, like Debate Mate, Scrabble and First Lego League to ensure there is something for everyone.
Leadership and active citizenship
Westminster Academy encourages all students to volunteer during their time at the Academy. Students engage themselves in diverse volunteering opportunities both in school and in the community. Our popular Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme provides an opportunity for students to develop in this area, as they work towards their Bronze, Silver and Gold awards. The Royal Air Force Combined Cadet Force is an exciting new opportunity at Westminster Academy for students to be trained in military drill and presentation, aerospace engineering, field craft and soldiering. It is an excellent way to give the students a sense of pride, duty, camaraderie, determination and discipline that they will carry with them throughout their time in the cadets and beyond.
Participating in clubs leads to further opportunities, such as local and national competitions, educational visits, events and potentially additional qualifications. Regular Enrichment Days enable all students to complement their academic and extra-curricular programme with a range of engaging trips and events, such as museum visits, language fairs and general knowledge treasure hunts around London.
Our international business, community and higher education links provide further opportunities for students to gain unique skills and broaden experiences, all of which allows students to develop exciting personal statements and CVs! In the past few years, students have developed food technology skills with Pret, participated in a Steinway masterclass, interviewed the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, improved teamwork on the Year 7 residential, competed in the UKMT maths challenge, heard new perspectives on literature from a SOAS lecturer, fundraised for several charities, studied genetics at Imperial College and received a masterclass from an Olympian!
