Academic excellence continues at Westminster Academy

Westminster Academy students are celebrating 73% of students achieving the benchmark A*-C in English and Maths at GCSE.

Notable success was achieved in Science, in which 87% of students achieved A*-C. In English Language or English Literature 84% of students achieved A*-C, which the Academy is particularly proud of given that 85% of students have English as an additional language.

Other subjects that have achieved exceptional results include Spanish, in which 81% of students achieved A*-C; Additional Science, in which 99% of students achieved A*-C; and in Further Additional Science, in which 90% of students achieved at least an A grade.

Following five years of hard work and one especially anxious summer, students gathered at the Academy this morning to learn their fate, supported by their teachers and the Principal. Among the high achievers were Siana Zhekova, who achieved an outstanding 10 A*. Siana adds these impressive grades to her recent success at the Teen Tech Awards 2016; her ‘emergency necklace bridge’ won the Design and Construction Award.

I am quite astounded by the results I received. They reflect the dedication and efforts of both my teachers and I to meet my academic potential.
- Siana Zhekova

Siana is now looking forward to starting the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at Westminster Academy in September.

Joining her on the course will be talented musician John Farinas, who achieved 6 A*, 3 A and 1 B, and resident artist Aysha Syeda, who achieved 5 A* and 5 As. Aysha attributes her success to starting revision as early as possible. Arsiney Khovanskiy was particularly pleased with his 5 A* and 3 As, having only arrived in the country two years ago.

I am really proud of what I have been able to achieve.

- John Farinas

Classmate Uliks Sekiraqa has been studying Latin in an after school class, thanks to the Academy’s link with University College School. Upon receiving his results he said,

I feel relieved, and I am shocked by my A* in Latin!

- Uliks Sekiraqa

These achievements follow a successful set of Sixth Form results, with 100% of students achieving the equivalent of A*-B grades in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, Career-related Programme and vocational courses.

Westminster Academy Principal, Dr Saima Rana, said

I am privileged to have been a part of the journey of this cohort, who have developed from excitable Year 7s to the talented, inquisitive, open-minded, respectful group of young people who have today made us proud with this outstanding set of GCSE results.

- Dr Saima Rana

“Five years ago, when these students joined the Academy, just 46% of students were achieving five A*-Cs with English and Maths, so it seems an appropriate time to reflect on the huge improvements the Academy is making year after year, and the passion and care these students, their dedicated teachers, parents, Academy sponsors, governors and business and community partners have shown to contribute to today’s success”.
