Back to NewsUnderstanding financial education with WizeUp
On Monday 9th February, Year 12 students participated in four financial education workshops delivered by WizeUp.
I found the the workshop led by WizeUp extremely insightful because it translated complicated financial ideas into situations that actually apply to my everyday life as a student. Instead of only talking about money in theory, the session explained how small decisions, like saving regularly or avoiding impulsive spending, can shape long-term stability. The discussion about risk particularly stood out to me, since I previously assumed investing was mainly about luck. Learning about diversification, time horizons, and emotional discipline helped me understand that safe investing is more about patience and planning than chasing quick profit. I also appreciated how the speakers warned us about online scams and misleading advertisements, showing practical signs to watch for before trusting any opportunity. The budgeting activity made me realise how quickly expenses add up and why tracking spending is necessary for independence in adulthood.
Overall, the workshop changed my perspective from seeing finance as intimidating to seeing it as a skill that improves with practice, and it motivated me to start thinking responsibly about future goals such as university, housing, and financial security. I now feel more confident discussing money with family and making informed choices instead of relying on assumptions in the years ahead.
