Back to NewsExciting workplace visits and employability skills with Construction Youth Trust
Over the past academic year, students across Years 11 and 13 have taken part in the Construction Youth Trust (CYT) programme, which has been a highly successful and impactful opportunity.
The programme has combined structured in-school workshops with employer engagement, site visits and practical experiences, giving students a realistic and comprehensive insight into the construction industry and its wide range of career pathways.
In school, students developed key employability skills through CV-writing workshops, mock interviews and interview preparation sessions. They also took part in Q&A sessions with industry professionals, allowing them to gain first-hand knowledge about roles, training routes and progression opportunities within construction. These activities significantly supported students in building confidence, professionalism and readiness for the world of work.
Employer engagement was a key strength of the programme. Students visited a live ISG construction site to learn about site operations and health and safety, completed hands-on carpentry practicals delivered by McLaren Construction, and visited the Willmott Dixon offices to explore office-based roles such as project management, surveying and design. In addition, many Year 13 students have benefited from paid internships organised through CYT and have attended recruitment days with leading companies, including Gleeds, providing valuable exposure to real employment opportunities.
Overall, the CYT programme has played a vital role in supporting students’ career development and future progression. Sign-up for 2026 programme with Year 10 and Year 12 students is still available - please speak to our Careers Lead, Ms Jomaa, for further information!
